From Slack to European Open Source alternatives
Why organisations are reconsidering Slack
Slack has changed how teams communicate and collaborate. But for organisations with growing requirements around data control, security, compliance and digital sovereignty, where communication data is stored and who controls the platform are becoming increasingly important questions.
Moving to an open source alternative gives organisations more choice over how their communication environment is deployed, integrated and managed - without giving up the channels, messages and everyday collaboration users are familiar with.
Keep the way your teams work
Moving away from Slack doesn't mean starting over with how your teams communicate. Both Mattermost and Rocket.Chat provide familiar ways to collaborate through channels, direct messages, group conversations, threads and file sharing. Mattermost har dessutom calls/screen sharing, medan Rocket.Chat har stöd för bland annat channels, groups, DMs, threads och multimedia/file sharing.
- CHANNELS
Keep conversations organised around teams and topics.
- MESSAGING
Communicate through direct and group messages.
- FILES
Share files and information where conversations happen.
- CALLS & COLLABORATION
Move from messaging into richer team collaboration.
Choose the platform that fits your organisation
There isn't one open source alternative that fits every organisation. Mattermost and Rocket.Chat both provide secure communication platforms with greater control over deployment and data, but their capabilities and focus differ.
Collaboration built around teams and workflows
Mattermost
Mattermost combines channels, direct and group messaging, file sharing and calls with integrations and workflow capabilities. It can be deployed in environments where organisations need greater control over their collaboration data and infrastructure.
Secure communication with flexible deployment
Rocket.Chat
Rocket.Chat combines channels, direct messaging, threads and file sharing with extensive identity, integration and deployment options. It can be deployed in the cloud, on your own infrastructure or, on supported plans, in isolated environments.
Your move from Slack doesn't have to happen all at once - and it probably shouldn't.
A migration built around your organisation
Moving from Slack doesn't have to happen all at once. We start by understanding how your teams work today, what data and integrations you rely on, and your requirements for security, identity and hosting.
From there, Redpill Linpro helps you evaluate the right alternative, plan the migration and introduce Mattermost or Rocket.Chat at a pace that works for your organisation. Existing Slack data can be migrated depending on your setup and available export, while users and teams can be prepared before a wider rollout.
We support you throughout the journey - from evaluation and migration to integration, hosting and ongoing support.
Try before you commit - Proof of Concept
Test the platform in your own context before deciding on a wider migration.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Both platforms provide migration tooling for Slack, but the exact data available for migration depends partly on your Slack plan and export.
Mattermost's migration process can preserve core collaboration data including users, channels, message history, direct messages, threads and files. Rocket.Chat's Slack importer supports users, channels and messages and can process files associated with imported Slack messages.
Not everything necessarily transfers automatically. For example, Mattermost notes that Slack apps, bots, workflows and some other Slack-specific features need to be recreated or replaced after migration.
Existing integrations should be assessed as part of the migration rather than assumed to transfer automatically.
Mattermost supports integrations through plugins, APIs, webhooks, bots and slash commands, including integrations with tools such as GitHub, GitLab and Jira. Some Slack-compatible integration formats can also make parts of existing integrations easier to recreate.
Rocket.Chat supports external integrations through webhooks, APIs and Marketplace apps.
Yes. Both platforms support integration with enterprise identity systems, although the available capabilities can depend on the selected edition or plan.
Rocket.Chat supports options including LDAP/Active Directory, SAML, OAuth and OpenID Connect.
Both platforms provide alternatives to relying solely on a vendor-controlled public SaaS environment and can support self-managed deployment models.
Rocket.Chat documents cloud-hosted, self-managed and air-gapped deployment options, with availability depending on plan.
